  • What issues are addressed?:
  • Wellsprings works with the most disadvantaged women in Melbourne. We target women:
    • from migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker backgrounds.
    • from low socio-economic backgrounds.
    • who have experienced trauma due to violence or refugee circumstances.
    • with low literacy skills and limited education.
    • who are isolated and vulnerable.

While many women come to our centre to engage in literacy, numeracy and computer skills, for many women, the journey to employment is fraught with barriers, particularly as language acquisition can take many years.

Being involved in a hands-on industry, which incorporates language acquisition as part of the learning, provides women with realistic pathways to economic independence and income security.
  • Project Description:
  • Wellsprings is seeking funds for a women's shed. The Wellsprings Women's Shed involves the design and establishment of a women's workshop spaces, where a number of workshops build up women's skills, including: upholstery, sewing of household and personal fashion items, jewellery making, learning to use power tools, bike repairs and other handy work plus making artificial flower arrangements, for example. The workshops train women and work with them to build their employability skills and create various items for sale at local shops and markets, and via a dedicated website.

We have been given access to land at a secondary school in which to build the Women's shed. We now need $20,000 for the shed construction, and would love an additional $60-80,000 to pay for a part time manager and equipment.
  • Alleviating suffering / disadvantage?:
  • Wellsprings Women’s Shed builds on the skills of women we support, enabling them to generate an income. Opportunities for women facing disadvantage to develop and use their skills to generate income are rare, and the Women's Shed helps to address that barrier to income-generation.
  • Changing Policy, Practices & Systems?:
  • This project cuts through bureaucratic barriers that preclude women from accessing traditional opportunities to learn and apply skills to establish their economic independence. Institutions like TAFE, for example, are often beyond their reach. This project showcases an alternative model to working with highly disadvantaged women to achieve economic independence.
  • Investing in or empowering women?:
  • The Women's Shed is designed specifically to empower women. It builds their creative skills and talents to help them to become more entrepreneurial, enabling them to use various marketing tools to sell their products. The women are encouraged to either work in a social enterprise with other women, or to work for themselves
  • Media / Promotion?:
  • The project will engage traditional and social media to highlight the project, its objectives and outcomes. The project will use its website, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as articles in publications to showcase women's stories and advocate for more investment in endeavours to address poverty, unemployment, and disadvantage.
  • How is success evaluated / measured?:
  • A steering committee of qualified business and trades women will monitor progress of the Women's Shed by:
    • Developing the necessary documents for the project including: a business case, implementation plan, marketing and fundraising plan and evaluation plan. The Committee will meet monthly to monitor progress, provide direction and guidance.
    • Evaluation of the project will hinge on meeting the project's targets on time and to budget, modifying the approach as necessary, ramping up efforts when required, and helping the team to remain focused and motivated.
